Am I the only one who thought, despite his protests, John was cruising the hell out of Sherlock at the restaurant in Study in Pink? The lovely hopeful look when he asked if Sherlock had a boyfriend. The odd expression when Sherlock said no. The breathy, mumble of unattached, like me.... ~~The eye fucking...~~ The looks...

This newest incarnation of Holmes and Watson seems a departure to me from the others. For as much as I know they won't go there, I can really see this Watson and this Holmes being more than simply friends.

With the other incarnations, Rathbone/Bruce, Brett/Burke, Brett/Hardwicke, Cushing/Morell, Cushing/Stock... There was always the deepest friendship and caring, but the imbalances of age/power/cleverness really precluded anything other than simple close friendship between them. The case was the thing, the story lie solely in the mystery, not with the players.

With these two, however, it is as much about their relationship as it is about the solving of the mysteries. Their home life is openly shown, their bitching and sniping and hints at what they do beyond the actual mysteries. How they are settling in with each other is just as important as the mystery. The hilarious shopping segment with poor John growing ever more frustrated, John speaking with his therapist, the minor characters interacting with him, everyone assuming he's Sherlock's boyfriend. As more time passes, John grows more and more fascinated by Sherlock and Sherlock comes to depend more and more on John. I enjoyed the way John's date with Sarah played out.

What it looks like to me is that John is quite interested in Sherlock but that as a military man, that's something he's had to cut himself off from or it's something that has just rather cropped up on meeting Sherlock because his desperate flirting with Anthea and Sarah strike me as someone who's in serious denial about what is happening in his head. Or serious fear. Very much of the 'please let me get a girlfriend now so i can get my mind off him' sort of feel. Their whole conversation in the restaurant made this plain. It seems everyone knows what's going to go on except John, or he knows too and just wishes everyone else would shut up about it please.

Welcome to Sherlock and John.

After viewing the first episode of the BBC's newest version of the Sherlock Holmes world, I was totally hooked. Since there are no communities on Dreamwidth, I just had to start one.

Discussion and fiction are welcome. I look forward to discussing this great new take on the Holmes/Watson Adventures!
